Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It often presents with mild or no symptoms, making it easy to overlook. Early detection is crucial because untreated chlamydia can lead to serious health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and increased susceptibility to other STD, including HIV. Regular screening, especially for sexually active individuals, can help identify and treat the infection promptly, reducing the risk of complications and transmission.
Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacteria are most often passed from one person to another during sexual contact, including oral, anal or intercourse.
Male symptoms of gonorrhoea infection include:
Painful urination.
Pus-like discharge from the tip of the penis.
Pain or swelling in one testicle.
Female symptoms of gonorrhoea infection include:
Increased discharge.
Painful urination.
bleeding between periods, such as after intercourse.
Abdominal or pelvic pain.
Treatment for gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is treated with a single dose of antibiotics, which can be an injection or tablets.
WOMAN: Cervical Swab Instructions
Using a sterile swab, gently rotate and collect a sample from the surface of the cervix (insert 5cm into the vag inaa)
MAN: Urethral Swab Instructions
Gently insert a sterile swab about 1-2 cm into the urethra. Rotate the swab for a few seconds to collect the sample.
