*Guide to planting mini Japanese lotus seeds:
Step 1: The round end is the one that needs to be processed. Use a sharp knife to peel a little bit of the shell at this end so the seed can absorb water quickly and sprout faster. Alternatively, you can rub this end on a cement surface to thin the shell. It’s fine if a little of the flesh is scraped, but avoid damaging the lotus heart. The pointed end doesn’t need any processing.
Step 2: Soak the treated mini Japanese lotus seeds in water, changing the water twice a day. During the sprouting and growth stage, expose the seeds to gentle sunlight in the morning and afternoon to prevent the plant from becoming stunted later on. When soaking the lotus seeds, make sure to protect them from being chewed by rodents.
Step 3: After about 5-7 days, you will see the sprout emerge. At this point, start preparing the mud for the lotus. Since it's hard to find natural mud, you can use alluvial soil in a pot or cup. Mix it with water, let it settle for about a week, and then it will be ready for planting the lotus.
– When choosing soil or mud, make sure to find a clean source. You can treat it by adding some lime powder into the pot, letting it settle for a week to kill any pathogens. The soil-to-water ratio in the pot is usually 4 parts mud and 5 parts water, depending on the size of the pot.
Step 4: When the sprout has grown longer, wait for the lotus to produce leaves and roots. By now, the mud will have settled, and you can gently place the seed into the mud. The lotus will naturally root itself. Place it in a sunny spot. Don’t bury the seed deep into the mud to avoid it rotting.
Step 5: After more than a month, the leaves of the mini Japanese lotus will have grown significantly. You can buy some fungicide spray and mix it according to the instructions on the package. Spray the leaves thoroughly, and repeat the spraying once a week to protect the plant from diseases. There have been many cases where customers of the lotus shop have experienced leaf spot disease, which spreads and causes the plant to die if left untreated.
Step 6: After about 3 months of planting, we will have the first fragrant flowers.
