Sodium bicarbonate acts as a urinary alkaliser by increasing the excretion of free bicarbonate ions in the urine, thus effectively raising the urinary pH. By maintaining alkali urine, the actual dissolution of uric acid stones may be accomplished. Sodium Citrate and Citric Acid act as the acid component of effervescent granules. They increase the solubility of cysteine in the urine and the ionization of uric acids to more soluble urate ion. By maintaining alkaline urine, the actual dissolution of uric acid stones may be accomplished. Tartaric acid in combination with bicarbonates acts as the acid component of effervescent granules.

Sodium citrate is metabolized to bicarbonates, which increases urinary pH by increasing the excretions of free bicarbonate ions, without producing systemic alkalosis when administered in recommended doses. Sodium bicarbonate is excreted through renal and also via lung by forming CO2. Sodium citrate, citric acid and absorbed tartaric acid are excreted through urine.

UTIX Effervescent Granules is indicated for relieving of discomfort in mild UTI; symptomatic relief of dysuria; to enhance the action of certain antibiotics, especially some sulphonamides; in gout therapy as urinary alkalinisers to prevent crystallization of urates. The dosage and administration of the product is 4g to 8g (1 to 2 sachets) dissolved in cold water four times daily for 5 days or as directed by the physician. The route of administration is oral administration.

The product is contraindicated in renal failure or hypernatremia, hexaamine mandelate or hexamine hippurate therapy, and in overt and occult cardiac failure. It is also contraindicated in patients on a low sodium diet. The product should be taken into account of the sodium content (650mg of per sachet) of this product when taking antacids with sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate. The product may have an additive effect when administered with laxatives. The tartrate component of UTIX may be incompletely absorbed. Because of this UTIX may exert a mild laxative effect. Prolonged and excessive use may cause a systemic alkolosis and/ or hypernatremia.
