This sutra describes the original vows and merits of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, as well as his vows in his previous lives, and emphasizes the incredible power of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's vows.
The sutra records that Sakyamuni Buddha preached to his mother, Lady Maya, in the Trayastrimsa Heaven (the second heaven of the six heavens in the Desire Realm).
It praises Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's great vow of "not becoming a Buddha until hell is empty, and not attaining Bodhi until all sentient beings are saved", and introduces typical examples of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's practice in the causal realm.
