Origin of the Seven Dragon Buddha
According to ancient scriptures, while Buddha Shakyamuni was meditating under the Bodhi tree by a lake, the demon Mara attempted to disrupt his meditation by summoning storms. The weather turned extremely harsh, with strong winds and heavy rain, causing a rapid drop in temperature. Witnessing this, the god Shiva sent his seven dragon kings to protect the Buddha. The dragon kings formed a protective canopy over the Buddha, shielding him from the storm and allowing him to continue his meditation.
Another legend tells of demons who tried to test the Buddha’s concentration and intended to harm him. However, during Buddha’s deep meditation, the image of the Seven Dragon Buddha appeared behind him, exuding such an immense aura of power that it frightened the demons away. The Seven Dragon Buddha is thus seen as a symbol of the Buddha’s boundless protective power and is highly revered in Thailand.
Inspired by this belief, generations of Thai monks have crafted Nakprok for devotees to wear. It is hoped that all who wear this Buddha amulet will receive the Seven Dragon Buddha’s protection, turning misfortune into blessings and warding off disasters.
In the legend of the Seven Dragons protecting the Buddha, the “dragons” are actually serpent deities, with some versions suggesting they are cobras.
