Herbicide (Racun Rumpai)
Glufosinate (also known as phosphinothricin and often sold as an ammonium salt) is a naturally occurring broad-spectrum systemic herbicide produced by several species of Streptomyces soil bacteria. Plants may also metabolize bialaphos, another naturally occurring herbicide, directly into glufosinate.The compound irreversibly inhibits glutamine synthetase, an enzyme necessary for the production of glutamine and for ammonia detoxification, giving it antibacterial, antifungal and herbicidal properties. Application of glufosinate to plants leads to reduced glutamine and elevated ammonia levels in tissues, halting photosynthesis, resulting in plant death.
Glufosinat adalah herbisida berspektrum luas yang didapat dari dua spesies cendawan Streptomyces.Glufosinat sering disebut fosfinotrisin dan biasanya dibuat dalam bentuk amonium-glufosinat.Herbisida ini bersifat non-selektif karena dapat mematikan semua jenis gulma dan juga tanaman yang melakukan kontak dengan herbisida tersebut.Cara kerja dari herbisida ini adalah menghambat aktivitas enzim glutamin sintetase pada tanaman.Enzim tersebut dibutuhkan untuk sintesis (pembuatan) asam amino glutamin dan juga berperan dalam detoksifikasi amonia.Glifosinat akan menyebabkan glutamin pada tanaman berkurang dan amonia meningkat sehingga fotosintesis berhenti dan tanaman mati.Paparan glufosinat dapat menyebabkan iritasi mata dan kulit.Senyawa ini dapat memengaruhi sistem saraf dan bersifat neurotoksik.
