[Instructions]

1. Drill out the old threads using the recommended drill size for respective thread sizes.

2. Tap the hole using the recommended tap size to cut the holding thread into the cleared hole.

3. Slide the insert into the installation tool. Rotate the installation tool to thread it through the insert until the notch in the tool contacts the tang of the insert. Continue rotating the installation tool to wind the insert into the threaded end of the installation tool. Using one hand, hold the installation tool squarely against the surface of the workpiece over the tapped hole. Rotate the installation tool to drive the insert into the tapped hole. As the insert is installed, be sure to allow the installation tool to float as needed to allow the windings of the insert to align with the threads in the tapped hole. After the insert is seated to the proper depth, unthread the installation tool.

4. Remove the tang of the insert by using a tang break off tool. Fit the tool snugly into the inside diameter of the installed insert. Allow the tool to rest against the tang of the insert, and hold it squarely in the hole. Strike the end of the tool with a sharp tap with a hammer. The tang should break off at the notch in the insert that is designed specifically for that purpose.

For large inside diameter insert, use long nose plier to break off the tang.

5. Recover the tang to complete the installation process.

[Tips]

One of the reasons that thread inserts fail in service is that they are improperly installed initially. A good rule of thumb is to install the thread insert so that the top of the insert is 1/4 or 1/2 turn below the top surface of the workpiece.

[Cautions]

Do not work against the thread direction when driving the insert into the tapped hole as the tang may break off.

[Remarks]

The nominal length of the thread insert is the length measured after installation.
