Learning to read is such a fun and special time: it's a valuable skill, and sparking an early love of reading can make it become a lifelong passion. In order to do so, it is so important early-on to scaffold our students' learning to help them bridge one concept to the next so that they don't feel overwhelmed. How can our little ones get excited and learn effectively if we introduce phonics with no particular order?

the following steps worked the best in helping students to read. With each step, and with enough practice, students are able to transition to the next level seamlessly.

After introducing the beginning letter sounds, we follow this order:

1. CVC SHORT VOWEL (a,e,i,o,u)

-ab / -ad / -ag / -am / -at / -ed / en / -et / -ig / -in / -og / -ox / -un / -up / -ut

example:  dad / jam / vet / hen / tin / big / fox / dog / nut / bun....

2. CVC LONG VOWEL

a_e / ai / ea / ee / ie / y (long e) / igh / i_e / y (long i) / oa / o_e / ow / ue / ew / oo

example： cake / read / sleep / flight / goat / clue......

3. Beginning Blends

bl / cl / fl / gl / pl / br / dr / fr / gr...

example： blanket / dress / grandma

4. Digraphs

ch- / -ch / sh- / -sh / th- / -th / wh / kn / ph / wr

example： bath / kbock....

5. R-Controlled Words & Diphthongs

al / au / aught / aw / ow / ui / ar / air / er / ear / ir / ire / or

example： draw / owl / chair / fire...
